Buddhism is one of the most popular religions practised across the globe. The main principles of the religion have been derived from the teachings of Buddha. Buddhism teaches mercy and universal love for all creatures and realization of the Ultimate Truth.
These basic principles of Buddhism are evident in the rites practised in a Buddhist Funeral. There are certain compulsory rituals that need to be adhered to during the funeral of a dead person. These rites are meant to ensure that the deceased is raised to a higher stage. Prayers are offered invoking the goodness of the departed soul and hopes are made for a blissful life after death for the departed.
The first stage in funeral rites is that of giving the body a traditional wash. After that comes the stage of chanting of religious texts by the priests, thereby directing the soul to the path of spiritual freedom. The monks recite those teachings of Lord Buddha that talk about the importance of practising compassion and kindness. Meanwhile, the deceased is made ready for the final journey. Friends and family members usually place some coins in the casket of the deceased person. This is done to pay for the dead person’s journey across the mythical River of Three Hells.
Then the friends and family pay their last respects to the dead person as the casket is put at the altar. While friends and relatives give condolences, visitors are expected to offer prayers for the deceased. The priests performing the rites keep chanting the sutras as the proceedings move on. The attendees present have to bow at the altar when this recital is completed. After the ceremony, the family members of the departed distribute gifts to the attendees for sharing their grief.
The family can decide upon whether to cremate the body or bury it as per their familial customs, once all these important rituals are over. The rites and rituals are a way of bringing peace to the family of the departed as they know their prayers are aimed at elevating the status of the departed in his after life.
